Virginia: Paul/Romney ballot only. GOP demands “loyalty oath” of Primary Voters

Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli released a statement yesterday saying the state will not adopt emergency legislation to allow additional candidates on the Virginia Republican Primary Ballot. Only Presidential candidates Ron Paul and Mitt Romney submitted the required 10,000 signatures. Attorney general says he was unable to find an alternative course of action that would be fair to both the Paul and Romney campaigns.

A further critical factor that I must consider is that changing the rules midstream is inconsistent with respecting and preserving the rule of law — something I am particularly sensitive to as Virginia’s attorney general. (citation)

In response to this, Virginia GOP has mandated a “Loyal Oath” to be signed of all voters, stating, “I, the undersigned, pledge that I intend to support the nominee of the Republican party for president,” in an effort to deter non-Republicans from voting in the Primary.

The measure, however, is a paper-lion gesture that should not get Blue Republicans and other swing-voters too concerned. “It doesn’t have any legally binding authority,” says the attorney general, “It’s an honor system.”
