Obama’s National Defense Authorization Act makes the “Patriot Act” look benign

While you were out on New Year’s Eve, President Obama signed the “National Defense Authorization Act,” granting law enforcement the power to, “indefinitely detain any terror suspect captured on U.S. or foreign soil, even if that person is a U.S. citizen,” said the Wall Street Journal. The Act, like the “Patriot Act,” provides that individuals detained as “terrorists” need not receive Due Process.

In addition to targeting U.S. citizens with indefinite detention without trial, the Act trumps the historic, “Posse Comitatus” Act, which was formed after the Civil War to limit the ability of law enforcement to use U.S. military to assist in enforcing U.S. law. As of December 31, 2011, the military may be called to assist in the management of protests and other forms of civil disobedience.
